With over 200,000 nail tech jobs in the U.S. and a job growth rate of 12% expected over the next decade, now is the perfect time to enter the nail care industry. Here’s how you can get started:
Find a Reputable Nail Tech Program
The first step to becoming a licensed nail tech is choosing the right program. At Academy of Hair Design, we offer a nail tech program that’s designed to equip you with the skills you need to succeed in the industry. We know that a high-quality education is key, so we ensure our program is well-respected by both employers and experienced professionals.
When researching nail tech programs, make sure to look for schools with well-attended student clinics. Practical experience is vital, and our clinic gives you the opportunity to work with real clients under the guidance of licensed instructors. You’ll gain hands-on experience while developing the artistry and precision that will set you apart as a professional.
Don’t forget to schedule a tour with us! We’d love for you to see our state-of-the-art facilities and meet our team. At Academy of Hair Design, we take pride in creating an environment where students feel cared for and supported.
Complete a Nail Tech Program
To qualify for your licensing exams, you’ll need to complete 600 hours in an accredited nail tech program. If you’re attending full-time, you can expect to finish the program in about 18 weeks. During this time, you’ll split your hours between classroom learning and practical training in the student clinic.
Our classes will cover everything you need to know for the theory portion of your exams, while the student clinic will give you the chance to perfect your skills. You’ll practice giving manicures, pedicures, and nail enhancements, all while working with real clients who can give you feedback and help you grow your confidence.
Pass the Practical Test
Once you’ve completed your coursework, it’s time to put your skills to the test with the practical exam. This is your opportunity to demonstrate the techniques you’ve learned in a real-world setting. The practical exam consists of four sections:
- Set up a workstation in 10 minutes
- Complete a manicure
- Complete nail enhancements
- Prove you understand blood exposure procedures
Some schools, including Academy of Hair Design, offer the practical exam on-site, making it even more convenient for you to test your skills.
Pass the Theory Test
In addition to the practical exam, you’ll need to pass the theory test. This written exam covers a variety of topics that are crucial to your success as a nail tech. Here are some of the key areas tested:
- Safety
- Sanitation and disinfection
- Client contact
- Nail structure
- Nail conditions that preclude treatment
- Health conditions that preclude treatment
- Massage
- Manicure and pedicure
- Grooming and trimming cuticles
- Nail enhancements
- Application and removal
- Nail tips
- Gels and acrylics
- Tools, equipment, and products
- Maintenance
- Nail Repair
You’ll want to review these topics thoroughly before your exam, and don’t worry—we’ll help prepare you with all the knowledge you need to succeed.
Apply and Receive Your Nevada Nail Tech License
Once you’ve passed both the practical and theory exams, it’s time to apply for your Nevada nail tech license. The application fee is $200, and once approved, your license will be valid for two years. You’ll also have the option to renew your license for a two-year or four-year period.
