How To Become An Esthetician in Nevada

If you are passionate about skincare, you might have thought about becoming an esthetician. Estheticians analyze their clients’ skin and determine treatment plans to address common issues. Estheticians also perform routine skincare procedures and educate clients on proper skincare routines. This role can be incredibly rewarding.

Complete an Esthetician Training Program

The first step to becoming an esthetician is enrolling in a program. The esthetics program at Academy of Hair Design covers different application techniques with professional products and helps you learn how various skin types respond to treatment. You can expect to learn:

Students can often complete a program in about six months, but we allow students to work at a pace tailored to fit their unique schedule — including night classes!

Pass Three Exams

Before you can receive a license to work as an esthetician, you must first pass three exams with at least 75% or higher. These exams are equally important to the Nevada Board of Cosmetology.

The written exam takes about 90 minutes to complete. It will assess your knowledge of product application, cleansing procedures, exfoliation, massage, safety, sanitation, chemistry, anatomy, color theory, and hair removal.

The practical exam tests your ability to perform esthetician services. You’ll be asked to perform tasks related to client protection, cleansing, steaming, massage, hair removal, makeup, and more. This test typically takes about one hour to complete.

Finally, you need to pass the Nevada State Law exam. This exam requires that you understand details about the State Board of Cosmetology, sanitary conditions, licensing, license renewal, apprenticeship, unlawful practices, and disciplinary action. This test consists of 25 questions and assesses your fitness to work as a professional in the state.

Submit a License Application

The Nevada Board of Cosmetology requires an application before you can receive your license. The application packet should include an application request form, a verification of graduation from your esthetician program, and an application request fee. Once your license application is received and accepted, you will receive your license in the mail. Upon approval, you’ll be able to start searching for jobs where you can make your dreams a reality.

Start Working as an Esthetician

Estheticians work in various settings, including spas, wellness centers, beauty salons, medical spas, clinics, and resorts. Some estheticians even start their own businesses. In order to find a job, you’ll need to update your resume with your completed coursework and training. This is also a great way to show off any skills you gained during an apprenticeship.

In order to become an esthetician, you may also need to flex some of your networking muscles. Attend industry events, trade shows, and conferences to meet potential employers and other estheticians. Esthetician jobs are available on local job boards, company websites, and social media platforms. You may also have some success reaching out to spas, salons, and clinics in your area.

As you interview for positions, it’s crucial that you prepare for each one. Research the companies you intend to work for so that you can show a genuine interest in the work they do. You should also show off some of your knowledge during the interview, especially if you have previous roles related to your training.

If you’ve already worked as an apprentice in the past, you should build a portfolio that shows off your best work. You can include before and after pictures of your clients and show off the images as evidence of your skills.

Renew Your License

Every two years, you’ll need to renew your license to continue working as a licensed esthetician in Nevada. No matter when you receive your esthetician license, it will expire on your birthday. You can renew your license three months before the expiration date by completing the steps online, by mail, or by visiting one of the offices. License renewal is available for two years or four years at a time.

If you’d like to renew your license, you need to complete at least four hours of continuing education during the renewal period. These training hours should cover infection control, and a Nevada Infection Control Class and Test is available online for free, and you can take it anytime. If you do not pass the course, you can also retake it right away. Submit certification that you’ve completed the course with your renewal application in addition to a renewal fee.

Keep in mind that if your license has been expired for four years or longer, you may not renew it. Instead, you’ll need to reinstate your license by submitting a brand new application and application fee. You’ll also be required to retake and pass the three exams again.
